I think the ...This is absolutely excellent, Tobias! I think the one small part that seems central to me is "Barton’s suggestion that 'rather than biblical interpretation preceding and shaping Christian ethics and practice, it is the ethics and practice of the Christian community that needs to (and in reality does) precede and shape its biblical interpretation.' This seems a truism; we know the community came before the Scripture was written, and subsequently interprets what it wrote; only a certain class of biblical fundamentalists imagine the Scripture is the source rather than the product." So much literalism is based on this misunderstanding.

Of course, this took me well over an hour to read and digest because I also had to go down the CS Lewis boarding school rabbit hole; I've read a lot of CS Lewis, but never knew anything about that.Rick+https://www.blogger.com/profile/03322574092020268536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786565.post-11423495290630966372012-05-14T08:35:15.975-05:002012-05-14T08:35:15.975-05:00Thanks kamagra. There does seem to be a connection, also in the US in similar situations. It seems to be a negative synergy.Tobias Stanislas Haller BSGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08047429477181560685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786565.post-7263139032586381932012-05-14T01:15:52.078-05:002012-05-14T01:15:52.078-05:00Human sexuality is rampant in countries were there...Human sexuality is rampant in countries were there economy is poor. And in the long run this does get things out on the table. The increased transparency is all to the good.

Erika, I think a more progressive ABC would be great... let's hope!Tobias Stanislas Haller BSGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08047429477181560685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786565.post-38290509145891587112012-04-27T01:50:20.591-05:002012-04-27T01:50:20.591-05:00Here in the CoE we are hugely encouraged by the lo...Here in the CoE we are hugely encouraged by the louder voices of those who are inclusive. In the last week 2 serving bishops have gone on record and in public to express their support for gay marriage - that simply would not have happened some 6 months or so ago.

I think we're on the right path.

But I also think that the real problem lies elsewhere - the CoE needs a more liberal ABC who can reconcile his church to the culture it finds itself in and to speak to those who have simply had enough of all the anti women and anti gay rethoric.

But internationally, the ABC needs to be at least a middle of the road man to be a credible figurehead for the Anglican Communion and to have any chance to become an integrative man rather than someone who leads yet more divide. So he would need to be a lot more conservative than would be good for the CoE.

I cannot see how this tension can be overcome.Erika Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01812376497361267014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786565.post-31040365482173664192012-04-26T22:44:03.274-05:002012-04-26T22:44:03.274-05:00I, frankly, see it as a cynically-manipulative sig...I, frankly, see it as a cynically-manipulative sign. But it seems to me that remaining in relationship even when there is disagreement is the best way forward. By no means should TEC modify its views to placate -- as we did in B033, which I'm happy to say I voted against.

The very fact that the C of E has asked for input this time around is a hopeful sign. That input may still be ignored, and if that is so, so be it... but we will have remained in conversation. I think that is the Christ-like way, rather than the irascible walking apart we see from the Global South.Tobias Stanislas Haller BSGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08047429477181560685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6786565.post-5586375437195394452012-04-26T00:03:25.167-05:002012-04-26T00:03:25.167-05:00I really do think it's time we were all honest...I really do think it's time we were all honest with ourselves; unless there is a huge change in the leadership of the CofE and a major upheaval in the way it carries out its business, I simply don't see how TEC can continue to carry on in anything like a close communion with it and remain TEC. We've already compromised our values and faith in trying to please a network based entirely on an Edwardian system of school ties and proper breeding, and have - to put it brutally - betrayed and abandoned many who looked to us for hope.

No more. No more. This isn't what Christ wanted and all the arguments about "catholicism" do not make this a Christian communion.MarkBrunsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16971990948866488080noreply@blogger.com
